Alexandr Chulkov was born in 1962 in the
city of Lvov in Western Ukraine.
Soon after his family moved to
Ivano-Frankovsk - another provincial
city in the same part of country which
bears a heavy influence of the recent past.
Before World War II, both cities were a
part of Poland and young artists from
a very tender age were exposed to the
different cultures and traditions. First
of all, but not entirely, to the Russian,
Ukrainian and Polish tradition. The
intellectual awareness of his cosmopolitan
roots came to Alexandr Chulkov much
later, after he began experimenting with
different styles, trends and manners.
Nowadays, people who look at his work
can hardly believe that all the paintings
are from the one artist. The artist himself
believes that he was influenced by
French modernists of the early 20th century
and by the Japanese and Mexican cultures.
His gracious and powerful drawings can be
compared with the drawings of Matisse,
Picasso and Modigliani. His work is quickly
recognizable. His women are sensual and
desirable. Their bodies are unpridictable and
beautiful. Me mastered nude colours which
multiply these perceptions. When it comes to
other subjects, Alexandr employs entirely
different combinations of primary and
complementary colours where his hand
is obvious and his compositions are
sophisticated. Since 1997 Alexandr Chulkov
and his wife Tatiana live in Prague in the
Czech Republic. Alexandr fell in love with
Prague the beuties of which found the way
into his paintings. Since 1985 Alexandr
Chulkov has participated many art shows
mainly in Moscow and Ukraine. Many of
his paintings are included in private
collections in Russia, Ukraine, Great Britain,
Germany, Israel, the U.S.A., France,
Japan, Poland, Austria, Sweden and number
of other countries.
